Managing phone photos on an ARM laptop: what to check in the new Windows Photos preview

Microsoft is previewing a redesigned Photos app. Before trying it on an ARM laptop, check rollout eligibility, protect your originals and understand search requirements. Everyday users can keep using their current stable release.

Microsoft Surface

Check whether the preview is available to you

Microsoft began rolling out the redesigned Photos app to Windows 11 Insiders on October 15, with wider availability planned later this year. We checked the announcement on October 18. It does not establish that your Snapdragon laptop has received it.

For a family photo collection, we suggest staying with your current stable release rather than joining a test programme just for this preview. This is a guide based on official information, not a hands-on ARM PC test or a performance and battery-life assessment.

Focus on everyday editing tasks

The preview redesigns Gallery, Editor and Viewer, and adds editing and saving of HEIC and WebP photos in their original formats. The practical question is whether your own pictures open, edit and share successfully.

Try a few copies from your phone: a landscape shot, a portrait shot and a darker scene. List the changes you normally make, such as cropping and adjusting colour. One successful file does not represent an entire collection, and format support does not guarantee that every recipient can open the result.

Complete the workflow with copies first

Keep originals in another reliable location and create a separate trial folder. Edit copies, save the results, close the window and reopen them. Check orientation, framing and colour against what you intended.

Then finish the task you actually care about. Send the result to your usual phone or messaging app and open it there; if you need prints, try one small print first. Check both how the picture looks on your laptop and whether your family can view it before processing a whole album.

Check search requirements separately

Microsoft documents semantic indexing for improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs. Listed image formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP and ICO; optimised languages include Simplified Chinese. It recommends plugging in for initial indexing and letting it finish.

These are local Windows Search requirements, not a universal rule for every cloud feature in Gallery. HEIC and WebP editing does not put those formats on the listed semantic-search support list. If a photo is missing from results, check its location, format and indexing status, then try its filename or date. Do not delete or reimport the whole collection as your first response.

Check the Store and wait if necessary

Microsoft directs users to open Microsoft Store and select Check for Updates. Check the Photos update offered to your PC. The absence of the redesigned interface alone does not show that your computer cannot run ARM applications.

Note your app version, Windows version and sample file type if something goes wrong. Avoid unfamiliar installation packages or registry changes to force a feature. Preserve the original and your steps, then provide reproducible information through official feedback channels.

Use your own photos when choosing a laptop

Make photo management a practical buying check: import from your phone or card reader, view, edit and share, then test your printer if needed. Completing that workflow with your own files tells you more than a generic photo-editing claim.

Separately check any professional editing software, plug-ins or specialised peripherals you rely on. This preview cannot establish their compatibility or justify replacing a computer by itself. If your current PC already handles your everyday tasks, wait for the wider rollout and judge the results you actually get.
