Before reinstalling an ARM PC: a practical preparation checklist

Decide whether you need a repair or a fresh installation, then prepare the right image, drivers, backups, recovery keys and target disk information.

Define the problem you want to solve

A failed update, a malfunctioning application and a planned SSD replacement call for different responses. Write down the symptoms, the information you need to preserve, and whether you intend to repair the existing system or install it again. For a problem limited to one application, begin with that application's support guidance before rebuilding the whole PC.

This checklist covers preparation for a Windows on Arm reinstallation. The actual procedure must suit the specific computer, installation tool and operating system image. Sharing the ARM64 architecture does not make every device's boot environment or drivers interchangeable.

Record the device and operating system

Open Settings, then System and About. Record the system type, Windows version and device model, and match the full model against the manufacturer's support page. Save its recovery instructions somewhere you can read from another device, in case the installation environment has no working network connection.

Keep ARM64 and x64 images distinct. Microsoft's ARM64 download page offers a general Windows ISO, but warns that bootable installation media may require manufacturer drivers. After downloading, compare its SHA-256 with the official value for that exact release and language. Avoid images with unclear origins or device requirements.

Back up files and recovery information

List Desktop, Documents, Downloads, photos, projects and application data stored elsewhere. Copy the information you need to storage that will not be part of the installation. Open several recently edited, important files from the backup and check their content and revision. A completed copy progress bar is not a recovery test.

If the drive uses BitLocker or device encryption, make sure you can obtain the recovery key from another device and identify the matching recovery key ID. Keep keys and decrypted sensitive data private. For a managed work computer, confirm the recovery and reinstallation requirements with your administrator.

Prepare boot media and essential drivers

Move existing files off the USB drive before making suitable installation or maintenance media. You can first check that it boots, accepts keyboard and mouse input, and detects the internal storage without formatting the system disk. Keep the manufacturer's storage and network driver pages available, and obtain suitable offline packages if needed.

The uqitong ARM tutorials provide an entry point for supported Snapdragon PCs. Read the device and validation scope of the specific guide. Reaching the PE desktop confirms that the boot stage works; it does not prove that Windows installation, first startup and peripherals will all work.

Identify the target disk one last time

Before formatting, repartitioning or applying an image, check the disk model and capacity alongside partition labels and existing folders. Drive letters can change in a maintenance environment, so the label C: alone cannot identify the installation target. Equal-capacity disks need additional identification too.

Disconnect unrelated external drives, particularly the drive holding your backup. Use stable power and allow time for installation and subsequent updates. If the target is still uncertain, leave the destructive operation and establish its identity first. Formatting is not a way to discover which disk contains the system.

Include post-installation checks

After installation, confirm that the computer boots independently from its internal drive. Check the system architecture and version, then test networking, audio, the camera, sleep and wake, and everyday peripherals. Apply appropriate manufacturer and Windows updates, and complete a normal task using real files.

Only tidy away your maintenance materials after file restoration, applications and restarts are working. Keep a record of image sources, driver versions and problems encountered. A reinstallation is complete when the computer is usable again, not merely when an installer displays a success message.
